Alzheimer's Program
Accredited by JCAHO
"The Heritage" is a unique program designed to meet the needs of people challenged by
Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory loss. Opened in 1991, The Heritage is a specialized
environment in which a variety of methods are applied to meeting the resident’s need for care and
safety, social and intellectual stimulation and physical activity.
The magic of the program is the way in which our clinical team is able to come together to create a
sensible, meaningful day for the residents and themselves. Activities of daily living, such as
setting the table, taking a bath, or sweeping the floor are incorporated into a structured day that
includes social and therapeutic activities, as well.
Provinding a structured day helps to minimize the stress residents feel as a result of their impaired
memory and language skills. Research tells us that a calmer, more familiar and predictable environment
is healthier for people with memory loss, as they often feel vulnerable and respond defensively or
aggressively. Everything about the environment is focused on supporting the emotional well-being and
independence of each resident, within the limits of his or her disability.
The professional staff working in the program has been specially trained to understand the progression
and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. As individuals, each brings an understanding
of the personal tragedy of this disease, knowing that the human connection they make to the people they
are caring for will be the most important aspect of the care they provide.
The initial concept behind the development of this program was to create an environment in which everyone,
resident, family and caregiver, could feel good about the time they spend together in this home. It may
not be the home they remember, but we strive for the feeling of home – safe, secure and user friendly.
