Congratulations to Faye Corley, resident of Great Neck, on being the winner of our raffle at the Great Neck Multi-Cultural Festival. Faye won a $50 gift certificate to Colbah Restaurant as well as two beautiful lanterns. Thank you to all who participated and who took the time to stop by our vendor table. It was a great day in Great Neck.

In recognition of Speech and Hearing Month, the Administration and Staff of Grace Plaza would like to thank our Speech Therapy Department for their dedication and hard work. This month gives us an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the recovery treatments available. Grace Plaza’s Speech-Language Pathologists have received advanced training on various progressive technologies and are excited to bring them to the residents to enhance the speed of their recovery. Your professionalism and committment to our residents is greatly appreciated. Great job!
On Wednesday, May 4, Director of Admission Debra Fenner and Marketing Specialist Gina Irwin attended the Winthrop University Hospital Vendor Fair . This was an opportunity to meet members of the Case Management and Social Work department at Winthrop Hospital to share information on the wonderful services offered at Grace Plaza.
Grace Plaza is now offering an Alzheimer Caregivers Support Group, which is open to the community, family members, caregivers, and other interested individuals wanting to share feelings, experiences and information. It offers an opportunity to give and receive mutual support and exchange coping skills with one another in matters relating to people with dementia and their care. The meetings are being held on the third Thursday of every month at 2:00pm at Grace Plaza. For more information on this support group or to sign up, please call 516-466-3001 extension 215.
On April 22, 2016, Grace Plaza celebrated the Jewish holiday of Passover. The Recreational Therapy Department along with Rabbi Michael Klayman hosted a symbolic Seder Passover meal for the residents. Grace Plaza will continue to celebrate this traditional holiday for the residents throughout the 7 day celebration. At Grace Plaza we are happy to be able to bring this tradition to our residents and offer them a day to share this holiday with their families, other residents, patients and staff.
Volunteer Elnaz Ramezani and Marzieh Nassiri have been visiting the residents of Grace Plaza for many years. Elnaz, since 2004 and Marzeih since 2009, come daily to visit our Persian residents and bring cultural entertainment for their enjoyment. Elnaz and Marzieh also plan many Persian holiday celebrations for the residents and their family. Their presence in the residents’ lives gives a special touch to enhance their lives and gives the families a great sense of comfort. We thank these special individuals for their compassion and commitment, which bring smiles to our residents faces every day.
On April 6, 2016, Mary Davis, Certified Nursing Assistant at Grace Plaza was awarded the Employee of the Quarter. Mary has been a C.N.A at Grace Plaza for 33 years and has had numerous patients, residents and family members recognize her for her professionalism, dedication and compassion. Mary has been described as an “angel” by many for the outstanding care she delivers and her positive, upbeat personality. The Administration, staff and residents of Grace Plaza congratulate Mary Davis on this award and are honored to have her as part of their family.
Grace Plaza is proud to welcome Shahram D. Shamekh, M.D., F.A.C.P. Dr. Shamekh comes on board with an extensive background in Internal Medicine and Hospital Medicine and has been the President/CEO of Advanced Internal Medicine, P.C. since 2010.
He is currently an attending physician, and has admitting privileges, at North Shore University Hospital (Northwell Health) in Manhasset, Long Island Jewish Hospital in New Hyde Park, and St. Francis Hospital-The Heart Center in Roslyn. Dr. Shamekh has a private practice located in Great Neck and will be on staff at Grace Plaza to attend to the medical needs of the residents. Dr. Shamekh is also fluent in the Farsi (Persian) language, both written and conversational. Dr. Shamekh is a tremendous asset to the residents and staff at Grace Plaza and we look forward to learning from his accomplishments and experience.
On April 1, 2016, Mary Ellen Swersky, Director of Social Work at Grace Plaza gave an educational lecture to the guests of the Great Neck Senior Center. Mary Ellen’s lesson was focused on “Advanced Directives”. The guests were given information on the importance of preparing Advanced Directives for their healthcare needs. The goal was to educate the seniors in the community while also offering them options. This is one way in which Grace Plaza is committed to the community by offering education and information.

Recently community members visited with the residents of Grace Plaza to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Purim. This holiday is among the most joyous celebrations in the Jewish calendar. The children and adults entertained the residents with some music and brought some traditional food for them to enjoy. At Grace Plaza we are happy to be able to bring this tradition to our residents and offer them a day to share this holiday with their families.
Recently Grace Plaza Nursing & Rehabilitation Center held their annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The Therapeutic Recreation Department put together some wonderful entertainment of musical bagpipers for the resident’s enjoyment. Mayor Jean Calender of Great Neck also stopped by for a special visit. Special events like this are just one way in which Grace Plaza goes the extra step to improve the quality of life for their residents.

Grace Plaza is proud to welcome Gail Kass, MS, RD, CDN, as the new Chief Clinical Dietician. Gail comes to Grace Plaza with an extensive background in Administration in the food service industry. Gail received her master’s degree at New York Institute of Technology and her undergraduate degree at Queens College. Prior to her employment at Grace Plaza, Gail worked as a dietician at Margaret Tietz Nursing Home in Jamaica. Gail’s responsibilities will include the daily oversight of the therapeutic nutritional needs of the residents at Grace Plaza. Welcome to Grace Plaza Gail!
On February 14th, Grace Plaza celebrated Valentine’s Day for the residents with their annual “Dating Game”. As official host, Assistant Director of Recreational Therapy, David Sterling, fed the bachelorettes questions, while the selected bachelor listened behind the screen to their answers. Resident Victor Santos, our proposed bachelor for the game, who in actuality is married to the same woman for 63 years, selected resident, Eva Schatteles, who had all the right answers. Contestants did not go on an actual date, but were awarded a prize for participation. All participants and residents enjoyed the spirit of the event in good fun. All is fair in love, as they say!
